The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
