British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
